There is much more information available on KhowTong in the Thai language than in English. Various claims from Thai elders and online sources is that Khow Tong can either cure or assist in curing: cancer & side effects of radiation and chemotherapy treatments;  AIDS/HIV;  gout. CAUTIONS: We have come across occasional cautions that perhaps for some people Khow Tong should not be taken continuously over extended periods of time. We also think Khow Tong should NOT be taken together (at the same time) with Bai-Ya-Nang, but we are not positive. Perhaps alternate between the two if you want to experiment with what works best for you. Here is one article we found that shows both exceptional healing qualities of KhowTong (Houttuynia Cordata) as well as possible side-effects at the bottom of the page.

Traditional use
Houttuynia cordata is also used in folk medicine for diuresis and detoxification and herbal medicine for its antiviral, antibacterial and antileukemic activities.Recently it has been suggested that it might have anti-obesity properties. H. cordata was used by Chinese scientists to tackle SARS, as it is conventionally used to treat pneumonia.

H. cordata injection, a traditional Chinese medicine, is often used to relieve abnormal lung symptoms, infectious disease, refractory hemoptysis, and malignant pleural effusion in China.[citation needed] Its injection has a direct inhibitory activity against pseudorabies herpes virus in vitro.

Houttuynia cordata Thunb extract inhibits cell growth and induces apoptosis in human primary colorectal cancer cells.

It is reported that Houttuynia cordata Thunb. (HCT), a traditional Chinese herbal medicine, has many biological properties such as antiviral, antibacterial and antileukemic activities. However, the molecular mechanisms of cytotoxicity and apoptosis in human primary colorectal cancer cells are not clear. In this study, whether HCT induced cytotoxicity in primary colorectal cancer cells obtained from three patients was investigated. The results indicated that HCT inhibited growth of cancer cells in a dose-dependent manner. After treatment with HCT (250 μg/ml) for 24 h, cells exhibited chromatin condensation (an apoptotic characteristic). HCT increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and decreased the mitochondrial membrane potential (ΔΨ(m)) in examined cells. Mitochondria-dependent apoptotic signaling pathway was shown to be involved as determined by increase in the levels of cytochrome c, Apaf-1, and caspase-3 and -9. The decrease in the level of ΔΨ(m) was associated with an increase in the BAX/BCL-2 ratio which led to activation of caspase-9 and -3. Based on our results, HCT induced apoptotic cell death in human primary colorectal cancer cells through a mitochondria-dependent signaling pathway.

Dokudami, also known as Houttuynia Cordata, is a plant that has a lengthy history as a healing agent. It is also used in cooking, as well as in teas like dokudami cha, which translates literally to "Houttuynia cordata tea". This tea is created with a mixture of the Houttuynia cordata and Oolong tea leaves and Job's Tear's...

So what health benefits does this tea leaf offer? That depends entirely on how it will be used, either internally or externally. In Asia, dokudami is considered a "cure-all" medicinal herb. If taken internally, it is believed to help with the following: cervical infection, coughing, enteritis, gastritis, infected sores, cystitis, chronic bronchitis, lung abscesses, pharyngitis, snakebites, urinary infections, and tumors. If used externally, it can be used for abscesses, analgesic, bone growth simulation, boils, diuretic, snakebites, swellings, hemorrhoids, mild laxative, urinary antiseptic, and detoxification. Now some of that is probably legendary folklore, but there have been studies conducted that add some scientific backing to how dokudami functions as a medicinal herb.

One of the health benefits of dokudami, that has some science behind it, is that it can help fight asthma, as well as allergies. These disorders are both caused too much histamines being released. It can also remove free radicals from the body that are not supposed to be there, ones that come from processed food, pollution, and chemicals in water. Free radicals are believed to cause cancer and speed up aging. Dokudami has also been found to fight off bacteria that are harmful to the body. It is especially useful in fighting off two types of bacteria that cause acne.

Another benefit of dokudami is that it helps to boost the immune system. It does this by increasing the amount of lymphocytes, a white blood cell, that are made. It can also help reduce inflammation. Back when SARS was going on in China, dokudami was selected as one of eight aids to help treat it. It can help treat an infection within 24 hours of receiving an injection. Another thing dokudami can do is reduce swelling, which is due to it reducing inflammation. So a lot of what the tea leaf is believed to be able to cure may simply be old wives tales, but it does have some scientifically verified benefits.
